When will IVF be discussed?
IVF is in vitro fertilization: the retrieved eggs and sperm are fertilized in the laboratory, cultured into embryos, and then moved into the uterus at the appropriate time. It differs from artificial insemination (IUI), in which processed sperm are delivered into the uterus and fertilization still occurs inside the body.
Fallopian tube factors, some male factors, failure to achieve expected results with other treatments, and certain situations that require combined embryonic genetic testing may all enter into the IVF discussion. Whether to start IVF directly depends on age, medical history, infertility duration, ovarian reserve, and examinations of both parties. Just because you plan to go to the United States does not mean that you need the same treatment by default.
How does the initial examination affect the plan?
Doctors first need to know where the problem occurs. Records of past pregnancies and surgeries, menstrual and ovulation status, semen examinations, and fertilization and embryonic development during previous treatments can often tell a better story than a single lab test.
| Information | Mainly help to understand what | Pay attention when reading |
|---|---|---|
| Ovarian Reserve and Ultrasound | Follicle number and possible response to ovulation stimulation | AMH, AFC, etc. cannot be directly equated to egg quality or individual live birth probability. |
| Uterus and fallopian tube data | Are there any structural or other problems that may affect pregnancy? | Not all patients will need the same set of procedural tests repeated. |
| Semen and male medical history | Sperm quantity, activity and related causes | Primary results should be interpreted in conjunction with sampling conditions and clinical background. |
| Previous IVF cycles | Medication response, mature eggs, fertilization and culture performance | Provide complete records by cycle to avoid just writing "failed a few times". |
The hospital will determine which items can continue to be used based on the report date, specific items, and personal circumstances. Don’t go through an entire list of tests that your doctor didn’t order just to compile an online list.
How to progress an IVF cycle?
- 01
Drainage promotion and monitoring
Promote follicle development through medication, and observe the reaction with ultrasound and hormone detection. The type of medication, dosage, and retest intervals are determined by the medical team, and monitoring results may also lead to adjustments to the plan.
- 02
Trigger maturation and egg retrieval
When the follicle development meets the plan requirements, the team will arrange the medication and egg retrieval time to promote the final maturation of the eggs. Egg retrieval is usually guided by transvaginal ultrasound and involves sedation or anesthesia; fasting, accompaniment, and transportation requirements should be given in writing in advance.
- 03
Fertilization and embryo culture
The laboratory assesses egg maturation, using conventional IVF or ICSI, and subsequently records fertilization and embryonic development. Not every egg will mature, be fertilized, or develop into a usable embryo.
- 04
Choose Transfer or Freeze
The care team will discuss a fresh transfer or freezing embryos for later transfer based on your health, embryo development and any genetic testing. Blastocyst culture should also be discussed with the physician and laboratory team.
- 05
Pregnancy test and follow-up
Complete the pregnancy test according to the hospital's time, and then arrange a review or early pregnancy ultrasound according to the results. If you are not pregnant yet, the review should cover all stages of the pregnancy, not just the day of transfer.
Conventional IVF, ICSI and PGT are different decisions
| Project | What are you doing? | Relationship with other steps |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional IVF | Let the egg and sperm be cultured together to allow fertilization to occur | It is one of the fertilization methods. |
| ICSI sperm injection | Injecting a single sperm into a mature egg | Use in specific clinical situations does not mean that everyone needs it, nor does it guarantee the fertilization of every egg. |
| PGT embryo genetic testing | Carry out corresponding genetic testing after embryo sampling | The issues that occur after embryo culture are different from those of choosing IVF or ICSI. |
Receiving ICSI does not necessarily mean a PGT; deciding to have a PGT does not mean the test will answer all genetic or pregnancy questions. During the initial consultation, you can ask about the purpose, alternatives and additional costs of each item.
Why should the time for traveling to the United States be arranged in stages?
Attenuation monitoring is often discussed in terms of approximately one to two weeks, but pre-cycle testing, preparation for treatment, and subsequent transfer may span much longer. This range cannot be directly converted into the number of days of stay for everyone.
International patients can sometimes complete part of the preliminary examination or monitoring locally, and then go to the United States for egg retrieval; whether this connection is possible depends on the hospital requirements, testing conditions, and personal circumstances. If the embryos are frozen first or await testing, the transfer is usually scheduled at another stage, which may involve a second trip to the United States.
A more practical itinerary should write "what inspections will be completed on which day, who will review them, when you need to go to the United States, and which dates may still change." Flights, accommodation and accompanying arrangements are made around these points.
How to understand the results of egg retrieval and culture?
The number of retrieved eggs, the number of mature eggs, the number of normal fertilizations, the number of blastocysts formed, the results after detection and the final live birth are at different levels. Laboratory reports should be recorded item by item, and one number should not be regarded as the conclusion of the entire cycle.
Embryonic morphological grading describes appearance and developmental performance, while genetic testing answers questions about the items examined. The two cannot replace each other. When consulting on the next step, the report, patient age and past medical history should be combined to discuss whether to continue culturing, preserving, transferring or starting another cycle.
Risks, recovery and situations requiring timely processing
Inducing ovulation may cause reactions such as abdominal distension and injection discomfort; egg retrieval also involves risks such as anesthesia, bleeding, infection, and ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. The hospital will adjust the plan based on individual risks, and egg retrieval cannot be regarded as a casual examination during ordinary travel.
Activities during the recovery period, review and when it is appropriate to leave the local area shall be carried out according to the specific arrangements of the reception team. Do not stop taking medication on your own before or after a pregnancy test or change medication based on online experience.
In which stages should expenses be considered?
At least separately look at examination and initial consultation, ovulation-stimulating medication and monitoring, egg retrieval and anesthesia, fertilization culture, detection, cryopreservation, transfer and follow-up. Similarly, "one IVF cycle" is written. Some quotes include egg retrieval and culture, and some include an additional transfer. The scope of coverage may be much different.
If no embryos are available after egg retrieval and the subsequent transfer phase does not occur, the settlement method depends on the written terms. Before comparing quotes, determine the number of times, billing units, exclusions, and cycle cancellation rules.

IVF Frequently Asked Questions
Is it necessary to transfer the eggs immediately after retrieval?
Not necessarily. The patient's physical condition, embryo culture, and whether the embryo is tested may make egg retrieval and transfer arrangements separate.
Is the greater the number of eggs retrieved, the better?
Safety, maturity, fertilization and subsequent development need to be considered simultaneously. The final outcome of a cycle cannot be determined by looking at the total number of eggs alone.
Do I have to change my original plan when I go to the United States?
The new doctor should first be allowed to read past records and explain the reasons for continuing or adjusting the regimen; changing a country or brand is not in itself a basis for adjusting medication.
